Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the effects of oxidative torrefaction on fuel properties of torrefied products from durian peel. The experiments were conducted at temperatures ranging from 220 to 300°C, with a torrefaction duration of 30 minutes, under varying oxygen concentrations in the carrier gas (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 21%). Additionally, the research compared the torrefied products from durian peel and ash-reduced durian peel by water washing, aiming to remove inorganic substances that could affect fuel characteristics and hydrophobicity of the resulting products. It revealed that increasing temperature and oxygen concentration accelerated the decomposition of organic components in the durian peel, as indicated by decreased mass yield and increased carbon content. Particularly at 300 °C with 21 % oxygen, the carbon content increased as high as to 78.82 % and had the higher heating value (HHV) of 35.21 MJ/kg. Elemental analysis and Van Krevelen diagrams confirmed that the oxidative torrefaction improved fuel properties through dehydration and decarboxylation reactions, which reduced the H/C and O/C ratios of the products. Analysis of hydrophobicity using contact angle measurements and equilibrium moisture content (EMC) at 55% relative humidity showed that hydrophobicity increased with higher temperature and oxygen concentration during torrefaction, notably at 260 °C and 10 % oxygen. However, hydrophobicity decreased when the temperature increased to 280 °C, evident from the reduced contact angle at oxygen concentrations starting from 5%, indicating increased hydrophilicity. FTIR and XPS analyses showed increased hydroxyl and carboxylic functional groups at elevated oxygen concentrations, particularly at 280 °C with 10 % oxygen. The increase in carboxylic groups might be responsible for the observed reduction in hydrophobicity. However, at 300°C, under all tested oxygen concentrations, products displayed reduced hydrophobicity, aligning with behaviors typically observed in biochar. Pre-torrefaction water leaching at 300 °C across all oxygen levels effectively decreased ash content by 4–5 times, reducing hygroscopic inorganic elements (such as K, Ca, Mg, and Na). This resulted in lower equilibrium moisture content and higher contact angles, indicating improved hydrophobic properties. In conclusion, temperature control, oxygen concentration, and water leaching prior to oxidative torrefaction significantly influenced the fuel characteristics of the durian peel-derived products, efficiently enhancing their suitability as biomass fuel.
