| dc.description.abstract | Embankment construction on soft clay foundations often encounters excessive settlement and low stability, as the soil exhibits low shear strength and high compressibility. Supporting columns such as concrete columns, soil-cement columns, and gravel columns can be used to improve soil quality. However, these column types generally possess strength far exceeding what is required for embankment applications, resulting in high construction costs and unnecessary consumption of resources. This study therefore proposes a semi-rigid column concept, combining the properties of flexible columns (stone columns) with rigid columns (vibro-concrete columns), termed "Cement–Eucalyptus Ash Gravel Column Reinforced with Plastic Bottle Fibers." The objective is to investigate its engineering properties for construction applications while reducing material costs and environmental impact, by partially replacing cement with eucalyptus ash a waste by-product from biomass power plant combustion and by processing recycled plastic bottle waste into fibers to enhance material performance. The materials used include coarse aggregates of 4.75–9.50 mm and 9.50–19.00 mm, hydraulic cement at 340 kg/m³, and a water-to-binder ratio of 0.32. Cement was replaced with eucalyptus ash at 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% by weight, and plastic bottle fibers (2 mm wide, 70 mm long) were added at 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0% by volume. Compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, porosity, and coefficient of water permeability were evaluated at curing ages of 28 and 90 days, together with microstructural analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). The results showed that aggregate size, eucalyptus ash content, and plastic fiber content all significantly affected both the strength and drainage capacity of the columns. The mixed-graded aggregate (MG) produced the highest strength due to better particle packing, while the single-sized aggregate (LG) provided better porosity and water permeability. Replacing cement with 10% eucalyptus ash yielded the highest strength along with the lowest porosity and permeability coefficient. A fiber content of 1.0% produced the highest compressive and tensile strengths, while 2.0% produced the highest flexural strength. Furthermore, strength and drainage capacity were found to be inversely related columns with higher porosity exhibited lower strength. These findings can serve as a guideline for designing mix proportions of cement–eucalyptus ash gravel columns reinforced with plastic bottle fibers to suit specific application requirements, whether prioritizing strength or drainage performance, thereby promoting efficient resource use and reduced environmental impact. | en |
