: Importance of Principles and Users Understanding of Bedroom Designed for Visual Impairment Persons

Abstract

Although the concept of Universal Design has been continuously promoted, a gap still exists between design principles and users’ understanding, particularly among persons with visual impairments who are unable to fully interpret spatial knowledge. This independent study aims to examine the potentials and limitations of persons with visual impairments in understanding bedroom design principles, to investigate the role of tactile media in enhancing understanding, and to propose participatory design guidelines that correspond to the level of users’ understanding. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, consisting of a pilot study and a main experiment, using pre-test and post-test together with behavioral observation. The sample group consists of 10 participants. The results indicate that the use of tactile media can enhance understanding of bedroom design principles, as evidenced by significantly higher post-test scores compared to pre-test scores. Participants were also able to interpret spatial structures in ways that are consistent with actual use. The findings suggest that users’ understanding of design principles is a key factor in supporting participatory design for persons with visual impairments.

แม้แนวคิดการออกแบบเพื่อทุกคนจะได้รับการส่งเสริมอย่างต่อเนื่อง แต่ยังคงพบช่องว่างระหว่างหลักการออกแบบกับความเข้าใจของผู้ใช้ โดยเฉพาะในกลุ่มผู้พิการ ทางการเห็นที่ไม่สามารถตีความองค์ความรู้เชิงพื้นที่ได้อย่างเต็มที่ การค้นคว้าอิสระครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาศักยภาพและข้อจำกัดของผู้พิการทางการเห็นในการทำความเข้าใจหลักการออกแบบห้องนอน ศึกษาบทบาทของสื่อสัมผัส ในการส่งเสริมความเข้าใจ และเสนอแนวทางการออกแบบเชิงมีส่วนร่วมที่สอดคล้องกับระดับความเข้าใจของผู้ใช้ การศึกษาใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยแบบผสาน แบ่งเป็นการศึกษาเชิงทดลองเบื้องต้น (Pilot Study) และการทดลองหลัก (Main Experiment) โดยใช้แบบทดสอบ ก่อน–หลังร่วมกับการสังเกตพฤติกรรม กลุ่มตัวอย่างจำนวน 10 คน ผลการศึกษาพบว่า การใช้สื่อสัมผัสสามารถส่งเสริมความเข้าใจในหลักการออกแบบห้องนอน โดยคะแนนหลังเรียนสูงกว่าก่อนเรียนอย่างชัดเจน และผู้เข้าร่วมสามารถ ตีความโครงสร้างพื้นที่ได้สอดคล้องกับการใช้งานจริง ผลการศึกษาชี้ให้เห็นว่าความเข้าใจของผู้ใช้ต่อหลักการออกแบบเป็นปัจจัยสำคัญในการสนับสนุนการออกแบบเชิงมีส่วนร่วมสำหรับผู้พิการทางการเห็น
